Who can stay as a refugee in Canada?
In order to stay in Canada as a refugee, you must belong to either of the two classes. They are:
Convention Refugee Abroad Class: The people eligible under this class
- Have been staying outside their home country
- Cannot return back to their home country due to the impounding fear of persecution based on:-
- Race
- Nationality
- Political Opinion
- Religion
- Membership of some specific social group (such as one based on sexual orientation or gender).
Are sponsored by:-
- Government of Canada: they are known as Government-Assisted refugees.
- An organization or a group of people: They are known as Privately-Sponsored refugees.
- Combination of both the above types of sponsors: they are known as Blended Visa Office-Referred Refugees.
You can also qualify to become a refugee of Convention Refugee Abroad Class if you have sufficient funds to support you and your family after arriving in Canada, though you need a referral from either UNHCR or a private sponsor or any other referral organization
Country of Asylum Class: The people eligible under this class
- Should be living outside their home country or the country where they usually reside
- Include those whose country of residence is seriously affected by an armed conflict or a civil war.
- Include those who have been denied basic human rights on a regular basis.
- Should be sponsored by any private organization or group of people.

How can you apply to become a refugee in Canada?
After you get the referral from one of the above mentioned referrals, you can apply to become a Convention Refugee or a humanitarian-protected person abroad. Along with the application, you also need to clear
- A Medical Examination
- A Security and Criminal Check
Some provinces like Quebec select their own refugees and therefore, the application to become a refugee in Quebec has to follow the set guidelines of Quebec.
You are not eligible to become a refugee in Canada if:
- You have any other secure and stable option of protection such as an offer to resettle in any other country of the world.
- You have already become a citizen of any another country that will duly protect you from hereon.
- You can choose to return to the country from where you left.
- The reasons that forced you to leave your country cease to exist.
